Cancer Survivors Month

As of January 2019, it is estimated that there are 16.9 million cancer survivors in the United States. This number is set to increase by as much as 29.1% bringing the total to 21.7 million, by 2029.

But who is a Cancer Survivor?

• They have no signs of cancer after finishing treatment.

• They are living with, through, and beyond cancer. The stages of cancer survivorship separated into three areas:

• Living with cancer – Receiving a cancer diagnosis and the treatment that may follow.

• Living through cancer – This is a period of time in which one may be going through treatment, but the risk of the cancer recurring is high.

• Living beyond cancer – During this time, survivors will go back to care under their primary doctor and create a post-treatment survivorship plan.

Many cancer survivors face short-and long-term physical, emotional, psychosocial and socio-economic issues that require intervention. Practitioners incorporate plans for cancer survivors as an integral component of a new standard of comprehensive, economically-viable cancer care.

Though the overall cancer death rate has declined, much work remains.
