We are recognizing Testicular Cancer Awareness Month

April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month. This type of cancer occurs in the male reproductive glands that produce sex hormones and sperm. While testicular cancer is rare in comparison to other forms of cancer, it's the most common cancer affecting American males between 15 and 35 years old.

The exact cause of testicular cancer is unknown, and some factors can increase the risk, such as cryptorchidism, abnormal testicular development, ethnicity, and family history of testicular cancer. There are two types of testicular cancer; seminoma, and nonseminoma.

Seminoma – a rare testicular germ cell that usually presents as a painless mass in the scrotum. Some symptoms may include back pain and flank pain.

Nonseminoma – This type of testicular cancer is more common and can spread faster than seminoma.

Most testicular cancers can be found at an early stage when they're small and haven't spread. Most commonly, a lump on the teste is the first symptom or a teste that is swollen or larger than usual. It's advised for men to perform self-examination of their testicles monthly ideally after a hot shower.

Testicular cancer treatment options depend upon several factors, such as the stage and type of cancer, the individual's overall health, and preferences. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. If you are wanting or needing to be examined, please contact us.
