Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Summer

Summer is a great time of year to enjoy the outdoors, spend time with friends and family, and have fun! Ensure you’re doing what you can to protect yourself so the fun doesn’t have to stop!

Stay Hydrated

Make sure you’re drinking enough water this summer. It's easy to become dehydrated when the temperatures rise. Certain medications or treatments can increase your chance of dehydration, so be mindful of your daily fluid intake. If you plan to be outdoors for an extended time, make sure to bring water with you to prevent heatstroke and other unfortunate dehydration symptoms.

Wear Proper Sun Protection

Spending time out in the sun can be fun but also unhealthy. To protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays, it's crucial to wear proper sun protection. Wear an SPF 15 sunscreen every day for when you don’t plan on being outside for extended periods. If you will be in the sun for a long time, wear an SPF 30 or higher on all areas of exposed skin, and reapply at least every two hours. Look for broad-spectrum sunscreens as well when you go shopping to make sure you’re protected from both UVA and UVB rays. Wear hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing when you can as well!

Protect Yourself from Bugs

While mosquito bites can be irritating, you also need to be aware that mosquitoes can carry deadly diseases such as Lyme or Zika, and transmit them to you. Keep your skin covered with clothing or effective bug repellent sprays especially if you will be outdoors later in the day or near standing water. If you plan on hiking, being near trees or tall grass, avoid ticks by covering exposed skin and checking your entire body afterward. Avoid being stung by bees, wasps, and hornets by staying away from any nests and avoiding wearing bright, floral patterns.

Practice Proper Safety around Water

Whether it’s the pool, beach, river, or lake that you’re spending your time this summer, make sure you are taking the necessary safety precautions. Never leave children unsupervised around water, make sure they have proper flotation devices if they need, use the buddy system, and teach everyone how to swim!
