Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST) Awareness Day

July 13 Is Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST) Awareness Day. As one of the most uncommon cancers, GIST begins in special cells that are found in the wall of the digestive tract; and though more than half start in the stomach, they can be found anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract and are rarely seen in the rectum.

To increase awareness and educate on what to look for when it comes to GIST, here’s what the cancer experts at NYCBS would like you to know:

What Are the Signs of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors?

There are a variety of symptoms that could be caused by GIST. With most stomach issues, symptoms can cover a range of issues, but if you are experiencing any of the below, you’ll want to talk to your doctor about further testing:

● Blood in stool or in vomit ● Abdominal pain (may be severe) ● Extreme fatigue ● Feeling full while eating small amounts of food ● Trouble or pain when swallowing

Your doctor might first do a physical exam before sending you for a CAT Scan, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), or Endoscopic ultrasound and biopsy.

What Are The Risk Factors?

Though GIST is rare in people younger than 40, it can still occur at any age, with the average age of occurrence being 50. In most cases, it’s not inherited, but in certain rare cases, the cause may be an inherited genetic syndrome. Unfortunately, with no lifestyle factors contributing to GIST, there is no known way to prevent it actively.

What Are The Treatment Options?

Treatment options will depend on a few factors, such as the size of your tumor, where it is in the body, if it has spread, and if it’s dividing. Surgery, targeted drug therapy, ablations, chemotherapy, and radiation might all be considered depending on your results. Treatment can be complicated, so a team of doctors might be needed to ensure you get the best approach possible.
