Dr. William LiPera

M.D. , FACP  
Dr. William LiPera has been a practicing board-certified Hematologist and Oncologist for the past 22 years. Currently, he’s an attending physician at New York Cancer & Blood Specialists and Stony Brook University Hospital, John T. Mather Memorial Hospital, St. Charles Hospital, and St. Catherine’s Hospital where he practices as an Assistant Clinical Professor, actively teaching medical students and residents. <br><br> Receiving his medical degree at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine and completing his residency and fellowship at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and at Stony Brook University Hospital, Dr. LiPera’s area of interest and expertise include GI cancers, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, pancreatic cancer, and blood disorders. <br><br> Dr. LiPera has published several articles on the treatment of colon and lung cancer. Also, he co-authored “The Encyclopedia of Cancer”, a book geared towards educating patients and their families on the treatment of cancers. Currently, he’s conducting a clinical trial for patients whose cancers are refractory to conventional treatments. In development are two laboratory research studies analyzing new treatments for lymphoma, multiple myeloma and GI cancers. Dr. LiPera is optimistic that the results of this research will lead to new promising clinical trials. <br><br> After receiving his B.S. in Biology from Adelphi University, Dr. Lipera went on to get his M.D. from SUNY Downstate University. He did his residency in Medicine at Long Island Jewish Hospital. Dr. Regina Jablonski

M.D. , FACP  
Dr. Regina Jablonski is a Board Certified physician in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology. <br><br> After receiving her B.A. in Biology and Chemistry from Bucknell University, Dr. Jablonski went on to get her M.D. from the UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She did her residency in Internal Medicine at the UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Her post-graduate Fellowships in Hematology-Oncology was done at Temple University Hospital and the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA. <br><br> Dr. Jablonski has been involved in several clinical research trials, some of which are being funded by the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Jeff Vacirca

Chief Executive Officer 
Jeffrey Vacirca, MD, FACP is a board-certified hematologist and oncologist at New York Cancer & Blood Specialists, where he serves as CEO and managing partner.<br><br> 
Dr. Vacirca is the immediate past president of the Community Oncology Alliance (COA), medical director for Amerisource Bergen specialty group, a Scientific Advisory Board Member for Caris Life Sciences, director at OneOncology, Director at Spectrum Pharmaceuticals and serves as a medical board advisor for Flatiron Health, located in New York City. Additionally, he is vice-chairman of the board for Odonate Therapeutics, a company he founded in 2016 which is dedicated to the development of best-in-class therapeutics that improve and extend the lives of patients with cancer. He was a recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Award for outstanding dedication to patient care and has been named in Newsday’s Top Doctors. Dr. Vacirca serves as a consulting physician for the Long Island Association for AIDS Care and was honored for his role in enabling LIAAC staff to bring state of the art HIV testing to New York.  <br><br> In 2014, Dr. Vacirca founded the New York Cancer Foundation, of which he is the chair of the board of directors. The Foundation provides financial assistance to patients undergoing treatment for cancer. Since its inception, the New York Cancer Foundation has helped hundreds of patients and their families with non-medical expenses including rent, mortgage, utility bills, and transportation to and from treatment. Todd O'Connell

President 
Todd O’Connell serves as President of NYCBS. Todd has more than 20 years of management experience in accounting and financial operations. Since 2016, he has been a significant contributor to the growth and success of NYCBS leading the practice in the areas of business negotiation, planning, and development. Todd executes organizational strategies, evaluates and revises processes and procedures, and serves as a business partner to the CEO. Todd is a 1999 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a minor in communication studies. He is a 2008 graduate of Nebraska Methodist College-Omaha, earning a Master of Science degree in medical group administration. Todd also holds a certified medical practice executive (CMPE) designation through the Medical Group Management Association. Todd sits on the Board of Directors of Community Oncology Alliance, is a member of the International Oncology Network (ION) Advisory Council, and is the Treasurer of the New York Cancer Foundation. Additionally, he served as Interim Chief Operating Officer for OneOncology. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf and spending time with his family.

Dr. Shahid Nawaz

Dr. Nawaz is a medical hematologist and oncologist. Dr. Nawaz is an attending physician with New York Cancer Specialists since 2004. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Khyber Medical College, Peshawar Pakistan. <br><br> He completed his residency in Medicine and fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Nawaz is affiliated with Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, JT Mather Memorial Hospital, St. Charles Hospital, and St. Catherine of Sienna Medical Center. Dr. Nawaz is on staff and holds a teaching position as a clinical instructor at Stony Brook University Medical Hospital. <br><br> Dr. Nawaz is actively involved in various clinical trials. Dr. Noshir DaCosta

Dr. Noshir DaCosta is a Board Certified Physician in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematology. <br><br> Dr. DaCosta received his Medical Degree from Seth G.S. Medical School, University of Bombay, India. He completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at LaGuardia Hospital, New York. In 1992, Dr. DaCosta achieved his Fellowship in Medical Oncology and Hematology at SUNY Stony Brook, University Hospital. <br><br> Dr. DaCosta has published numerous studies in Hematology and Oncology in peer reviewed medical journals. Dr. DaCosta has been a lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology and Cancer Biology in the University at Stony Brook School of Medicine. He is currently clinical assistant Professor of Medicine at University Hospital Stony Brook. Dr. Chu is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Oncology. <br><br> After receiving his BS in Biology from Cornell University, Dr. Chu went on to receive his MD at St. George’s University. He did his internship and residency training at Stony Brook University Hospital. He completed his fellowship training at Stony Brook University Hospital and was named Chief Fellow during his last year. <br><br> Dr. Chu has faculty appointment of Clinical Instructor and was elected to the Stony Brook Hospital medical board. <br><br> He is Chief of the Department of Hematology and Oncology at Mather Hospital and St. Charles Hospital. At Mather Hospital, he serves as Chairman of the Cancer Committee and Chairman of the Breast Program Leadership Committee. <br><br> He is the Associate Chief of the Clinical Research Department at New York Cancer Specialists. <br><br> Additionally, Dr. Chu is the Program Director of Mather Memorial Hospital's Internal Medicine Residency Division of Hematology-Oncology. He is also the Assistant Program Director of the Mather Memorial Hospital Fellowship Program. <br><br> Dr. Chu is a member of the Anticoagulation Committee for Catholic Health Services. <br><br> He has co-authored dozens of publications relating to oncology and hematology and has presented his findings at numerous national conferences. <br><br> D. Michael Boonin

Chief of Staff 
Mike Boonin is Chief of Staff. His responsibilities include overseeing the administrative team and project management ensuring all projects and tasks are completed timely and efficiently. A former Wall Street trader, Mike worked as an equity trader for over 20 years. He is a graduate of Guilford College in North Carolina where he majored in business management and accounting. Over the past few years, Mike has been instrumental in facilitating the tremendous growth of the practice which remains a leader at the forefront of cancer treatment.

George Calcanes

NYCBS Ambassador 
George Calcanes serves as NYCBS Practice Ambassador. Since 1998, George has served as Chief Clinical Officer. He focused on clinical quality and safety, value-based initiatives to improve quality while reducing the cost of care, performance improvement, and oversight of the overall clinical delivery of care. George was influential in the accreditation process for CAP, CLEP, ACHC, and QOPI. After 35 years in administration, George continues to engage the NYCBS community, and the need to bring our clinical professionals together to leverage our respective strengths in his new role as ambassador. Additionally, he ensures the safe administration of biologic treatments and medication regimens. George is a registered nurse and has a bachelor’s degree in administration. He has cared for patients in the following areas, Intensive care unit, Cardiac Care, Emergency care, Hospice, and spent nine years as a Pediatric Charge nurse. An absolute people person, George loves his colleagues and enjoys coming to work every day.

Sean Riley

Chief Information Officer 
Sean Riley is Chief Information Officer. He is in charge of all of the company’s information technology systems and Integrations. Sean has been part of the rapidly growing company since 2014. Prior to his role at New York Cancer & Blood Specialists, Sean was a former technician/digital marketer for Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI). Sean graduated from SUNY New Paltz where he majored in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics. Sean is an avid volleyball player and has won several gold medals.

Dr. Louis Avvento

M.D.  
Louis J. Avvento, MD graduated from the University of Rome with a degree in medicine in 1981. He continued with his residency at Jamaica Hospital in Queens, where he chose to submerge himself into the oncology world because, at the time, treatments were limited and patient care was extremely challenging. He wanted to be a part of a healthcare revolution to change the lives of oncology patients for the better and has found it to be the most rewarding career he could have chosen <br><br> After completing his fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Stony Brook University, Dr. Avvento began a private practice in Riverhead as a solo practitioner with a nurse and receptionist – a staff of three. The practice eventually grew to a staff of forty-five oncology professionals. Dr. Avvento chose the East End of Long Island because in 1988, there were no other practices around. He created a more convenient and comfortable situation for patients. <br><br> Dr. Avvento is board-certified in four specialties including Internal Medicine, Hematology and Hospice, Medical Oncology, and Palliative Care. He has been the Medical Director of East End Hospice in Westhampton, NY since 1990. He is the former Director of Palliative Care at both Peconic Bay Medical Center and Southampton Hospital in Riverhead, NY. He was involved in establishing the Palliative Care Fellowship at Southampton Hospital for training doctors in palliative care. Dr Avvento was also responsible for the palliative care board certification of 4 physicians at the Southampton Hospital and 3 Nurse practitioners at Peconic Bay Medical Center under the newly established palliative care programs. Dr. Avvento is a former board member of Fighting Chance and currently holds an appointment as Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professorship at Mount Sinai. <br><br> Through the years, Dr. Avvento has received multiple awards in recognition of his outstanding performance and achievements in the field. Lynn Kay Winters

<p>Lynn Kay Winters began her career in healthcare as an oncology practice administrator on the east end of Long Island. Acknowledging the need to keep pace with the growing needs of the practice, she completed an MBA in Ambulatory Group Management at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, MN. She achieved a Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE) designation from the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA).</p> <p>After joining NYCBS in 2016, Lynn Kay began project management in National Committee for Quality Assurance to bring practice recognition in the Patient-Centered Speciality Practice (NCQA-PCSP) realm Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) management.</p> <p>Lynn Kay holds the Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) designation and is an ASQ Certified SixSigma Green Belt. Lynn Kay is Regent of her Daughters of the American Revolution chapter. She enjoys boating and holds her Mariner’s license.</p>

Dr. Alexander Zuhoski

M.D.  
Dr. Alexander Zuhoski graduated medical school at Stony Brook Universityin Stony, Brook, NY after earning his Bachelor’s of Science at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. He completed his residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York, NY, and later returned to Stony Brook University to complete his fellowship in Hematology and Oncology. <br><br> Growing up, Dr. Zuhoski always knew he wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. He chose the route of Hematology and Oncology because he felt “there were few disciplines where he could make a huge impact on someone’s life” and also because he enjoys the “intellectual process of working with patients.” After his fellowship, he joined the Eastern Long Island Hematology Oncology team in 2003. He was drawn to the private practice because he believes it “allows him to become closer to his patients. One of the most rewarding moments and turning points of his career came when he had to treat both his mother and older sister; they are now both in remission. To him, “every day at the office is phenomenal.” <br><br> Dr. Zuhoski is board certified in Medical Hematology and Oncology. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and also is a mentor to Hematology residents at Southampton Hospital. Dawn Savarese

Chief Revenue Officer 
Dawn Savarese has been part of New York Cancer & Blood Specialists since 1993 when it was formerly known as North Shore Hematology Oncology Associates and had only two locations with six physicians. She has been a vital component of the Business Office after taking the position of Chief Revenue Officer in 2009. She has been instrumental in the development and growth of the billing department. Her extensive experience is in revenue cycle management, physician recruiting, practice mergers, physician-hospital, and insurance credentialing as well as malpractice risk management training.

Robert Nicoletti

Chief Human Resources Officer 
Robert Nicoletti is Chief Human Resources Officer. Rob works with Administration and conducts extensive recruitment efforts and interviews for physicians and employee candidates. He is instrumental in team building and succession planning. Rob believes flexibility is the key when looking for a potential candidate. He has been with NYCBS since 2015. For 12 years prior, he served as Chief of Human Resources at the Long Island Association for AIDS CARE, Inc. Additionally, Rob was the Manager of Human Resources for Publisher's Clearing House. Rob attended the New York Institute of Technology, where he obtained a BS in business management. He is certified by Cornell University in Human Resource Management. His favorite show to binge-watch is Vanderpump Rules.

Dr. Martin Silverstein

M.D.  
Dr. Martin Silverstein is a board-certified radiation oncologist. He received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from Boston University and completed his residency in radiation oncology at the SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn where he served as chief resident. His post-doctoral training began with a surgical residency at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine and was followed by additional training in urology at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, spurring his interest in prostate cancer treatment. <br><br> Following his residency, Dr. Silverstein was an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and served as an assistant attending in Radiation Oncology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In 1995, Dr. Silverstein joined the practice of New York Cancer Specialists. Dr. Harry Staszewski

Chief Medical Officer 
<p>Dr. Staszewski served as Chief of the Oncology Hematology Division at Winthrop-University Hospital from 1996-2015, and is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at SUNY Stony Brook. <p>After earning an M.D. from Yale University, Dr. Staszewski completed his residency training and fellowships at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Staszewski maintains active memberships with the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, and the American Association for Cancer Research. He has been recognized as an outstanding hematologist by his listing numerous times in the annual “Best Doctors” issue of New York Magazine. Dr. Staszewski was the principal investigator for a number of clinical trials in breast cancer, leukemia, myeloma, and colorectal cancers. He fosters innovation and research, particularly in cutting edge molecular diagnostic technology, helping to bring personalized medicine and bio-marker research from theory to reality.</p> <p>He has published numerous articles in major peer-reviewed medical journals. During his 30+ year career in Medicine, Dr. Staszewski continues to develop and maintain the ongoing medical education of physicians and clinical staff. Dr. Staszewski has been closely involved in mentoring and teaching medical students, residents and sub-specialty fellows.</p> <p>Dr. Staszewski’s clinical practice spans the entire spectrum of hematological and oncological disorders but he has a particular interest in hematological malignancies and colorectal cancer. At New York Cancer & Blood Specialists, Dr. Staszewski currently serves as Chief Medical Officer.</p>

Dr. Joseph Cirrone

M.D.  
Dr. Cirrone has made it his lifelong ambition to learn as much about the cancer process, the treatment of cancer, and the cancer patient. He gravitated to the Radiation Oncology field for the challenge of mastering a single modality for the benefits of treating patients and for its multidisciplinary approach towards cancer treatment. During his Radiation Oncology training he learned how to treat all types of cancer and has treated many difficult cases. One of his interests in Radiation Oncology is the treatment of patients with organ preservation protocol. Radiation Oncology has been used in many areas to eradicate cancer while preserving function of the treatment site. Such sites include head and neck cancers, breast cancer, and anal cancer. It has been our goal at North Shore Radiation Oncology (NSRO) to deliver the most precise, up to date treatments using the latest technologies for the benefit of our patients. Dr. Cirrone understands his patients are in a difficult time in their lives and he strives to treat each patient with compassion and the respect they deserve. <br><br> Dr. Cirrone graduated Albany Medical College and took a residency in Internal Medicine at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) because the hospital was affiliated with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). During his training at NSUH he spent much of his time at MSKCC where first learned to take care of cancer patients. After NSUH he trained in the Radiation Oncology program at Downstate University Hospital (DUH) in Brooklyn. The program was very busy and the training in Radiation Oncology was excellent. After completing his residency in DUH he became an Attending at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn. <br><br> In 2000, Dr. Cirrone transferred to NYCBS and moved his family with him to Suffolk County. Diana Youngs

Chief Clinical Officer 
<p>Diana Youngs, RN, MSN, ANP-C is a skilled nurse practitioner, who earned her degree from Yale University School of Nursing. She has been employed at New York Cancer and Blood Specialists since 2004, providing compassionate care to each patient she sees. Prior to joining our team, Diana worked for several top-tier cancer facilities, including Yale New Haven Hospital.</p> <p>Throughout her career, Diana has pledged her undivided attention and utmost care to each patient. She has supervised and overseen several nurse practitioners and clinical staff. She is experienced and well-versed in malignant and benign cancers. Her exemplary clinical experience is mentioned in several publications and research investigations.</p> <p>Diana is a vital asset to our team and her presence at NYCBS is truly appreciated.</p>

Ruth Morgan

Chief Research Officer 
<p>Ruth M. Morgan, DC, is the Chief Research Officer at NYCBS.</p> <p>Ruth is a strategic, results-driven clinical research and healthcare management professional with over 25 years of experience. Her proven success has been instrumental in cross-departmental operations and program management throughout the continuum of bench-to-bedside medical research.</p> <p>Ruth provides leadership, expertise, and operational direction for all research activities within NYCBS as they pertain to research needs, following NYCBS’s vision: contributing to the search for a cure by offering cutting-edge clinical trials and personalized, state-of-the-art treatments that save and prolong lives.</p> <p>Ruth oversees all research operations, providing leadership to ensure excellence in research performance and integrity. She maintains working relationships with both pharmaceutical and biotech companies with a singular goal of advancing cancer care.</p> <p>She received a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature at the University of British Columbia in 1995. She attended the University of Western States, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology and a Doctorate in Chiropractic.</p>

Neil Foley

Vice President of Sales/Govt. Liaison 
Neil Foley is the Vice President of Sales. Neil oversees our physician liaisons. Neil is also a government liaison who works with different municipalities at different levels of government to navigate permits and procedures. Neil has a B.A. in Liberal Studies and a background in Pharmaceuticals. Over ten years ago, he started as an American history teacher before beginning a career in pharmaceutical sales. He worked for Johnson & Johnson for three years, AstraZeneca for four years, and started specializing in psychiatry in pharmaceutical sales. Then, in 2008, he started working for Sunivion Pharmaceuticals. Since 2014, Neil has been a Brookhaven town Councilman. In 2019, Neil joined New York Cancer & Blood Specialists. Neil is a proud husband and father of four.

Riem Badr, MD, FCAP is a skilled, board certified hematopathologist. At NYCBS, she is the laboratory director, overseeing the overall operation and administration of the laboratory. Dr. Badr earned her M.S, MB, and Ch B Degrees from Alexandria University in Egypt. Dr. Badr completed two Residencies; one in pediatric surgery at Alexandria University Hospital, and another in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Westchester Medical Center, New York Medical College. After completing her Residency, Dr. Badr completed two more fellowships in Hematopathology and Surgical Pathology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles. Prior to her employment with NYCBS, Dr. Badr served as the Associate Director of Hematopathology at Inform Diagnostics since October 2017. Dr. Badr also served as the Director of Hematopathology and Senior Hematopathologist at Genoptix Medical Laboratory. Dr. Engracio Cortes

<p>Dr. Cortes completed his M.D. from Far Eastern University in Manila, Philippines in 1964. He did his internship at Cambridge City Hospital, Cambridge, MA in 1965. He spent his medical residency at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, Boston where his Oncology attendings impressed him with their teaching skills and knowledge of medicine, inspiring him to pursue a Fellowship in Oncology at Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, NY, under the tutelage of Dr. James F. Holland, in 1968. He then joined the staff at Roswell Park, doing teaching rounds with fellows, and basic and clinical research. In 1972 he accepted a position as Director of Medical Oncology Service at Queens Hospital Center, Jamaica, NY, where he started the first fellowship program in Oncology. He did the same at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ) in 1974, and became Director of Oncology Service and Coordinator of Cancer Program. In 1981, he resigned his position from both medical centers and went into private practice in Queens, NY. Dr. Cortes has admitting privileges at LIJ and New York Hospital/Queens (NYHQ), which was acquired by Cornell New York Hospital in 1990. At NYHQ he chaired the Institutional Review Board (IRB) (1987-2002) and is Director of Oncology Research (1998- 2002). Dr. Cortes was involved in clinical studies in lung cancer, breast cancer and head and neck, gynecologic and gastrointestinal malignancies. In 1976 he was given a grant from the National Cancer Institute to study BCG as a form of immunotherapy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Some of his studies were also supported by the American Cancer Society, Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) and pharmaceutical companies.</p> <p>Dr. Cortes’ experience as a clinical investigator, teacher and master clinician led to his appointment as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Additionally, he holds an appointment as Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. </p> <p>He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He was a Traveling Oncology Consultant for Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1978.</p> <p>In 1981, the Philippine Medical Association in America gave Dr. Cortes the Most Outstanding Physician award. He had served as Chairman of the Education Committee of the American Cancer Society of Queens, President of New York Cancer Society, President of Association of Philippine Physicians of New York, founding member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, board member of NY Hematology and Oncology Society, and a member of American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Association for Cancer Research, and New York Medical Society.</p> <p>Dr. Engracio P. Cortes is listed in Castle and Connolly’s Top Doctors of NY Metropolitan area and in Marquis’ Who’s Who in: Medicine and Healthcare, Millennium Edition; Science and Engineering, 7th edition; America, 57th edition; World, 20th edition, and the recent Who’s Who in America, 2009 edition. He was an honoree at the Annual Meeting of the Global Physician Network Foundation in 2017.</p> <p>Dr. Cortes’ research on “Amputation and Adriamycin in Primary Osteosarcoma” was first published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1974 (291:998-1000). An accompanying editorial by Dr. Joseph Burchenal of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center headlined it a “Giant Step Forward, If”. Several years later, it has been shown Adriamycin alone or in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents has improved the cure rate of Osteosarcoma from 20% to 55% and is now a widely accepted therapy for Osteosarcoma. This pioneering work is cited in major cancer textbooks in the chapter on Bone tumors. Dr. James F. Holland, Distinguished Professor of Neoplastic Diseases at Mount Sinai Center, NY, editor of Cancer Medicine textbook, and Dr. Cortes’ mentor, once said “Dr. Cortes, more than any other individual, introduced and pursued the importance of Adriamycin in the treatment of osteosarcoma. These efforts are represented in nine publications in peer reviewed journals and nine book chapters that he wrote”.</p> <p>Due to his clinical research activities, Dr. Cortes was invited to lecture at major institutions in the U.S. and abroad, including Bristol in England; Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Frankfurt, Milan, Paris, Caracas, Kyoto, Bangalore, and Philippines. She is well-versed in oncology and cancer-related illnesses, including reviewing peripheral smears and performing bone marrow procedures. Additionally, she is assigned to perform hospital rounds while maintaining on-call availability. Theresa earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Gannon University. She then attended Saint Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing, where her stellar GPA earned her three Rudin Foundation Scholarships. She was then granted acceptance to the College of Mount Saint Vincent, where she earned her Nurse Practitioner Master’s Degree. She continued to excel in academics being elected as a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society. Prior to working with NYCBS, Theresa served as an oncology NP at Saint Vincent’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. Additionally, she was also a family NP, treating patients with acute conditions and educating patients about disease prevention. Theresa’s warm personality coupled with her work aptitude makes her a vital part of our team.

Laureen Callahan

Laureen Callahan is a skilled, certified Physician Assistant, with 11 years of oncology experience. Over the years, she has developed the necessary skills and expertise to become an intergral part of our team. She currently works with a team of 50 medical and radiation oncologists and serving as the physician assistant to the CEO. She works with our pain management team and eases our patients’ discomfort. In addition, she is a subclinical investigator in 10 cancer and hematologic clinical trials and research. She has experience in emergency and aesthetic medicine. Laureen earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Hofstra University, majoring in Physician Assistant studies and minoring in Psychology. Additionally, she also completed her PA graduate training at Hofstra. Prior to her career with NYCBS, Laureen worked as the Director of Clinical Operations and Supervising Physician Assistant at Linchitz Medical Wellness, overseeing all chemotherapy administrative operations including pre-surgical and prior authorization clearances. Additionally, Laureen served in the clinical rotation at numerous medical facilities including Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and Nassau University Medical Center. Throughout the years, Laureen has passed her skills and knowledge on to others serving as a preceptor at the prestigious Stony Brook University Physician Assistants program, as well as Hofstra University and Touro College. Melanie Acierno

Melanie Acierno, DNP, AOCNP, attended Stony Brook University, completing her undergraduate studies in 1999 and her Masters of Science in 2002. In 2008, Dr. Acierno completed her doctoral thesis and Ph.D. studies. She has practiced alongside some of the most exceptional Hematologists and Oncologists over the past 20 years. Christina Johnson

Christina Johnson, PA-C is a skilled physician assistant, whose goal is to practice in a dynamic and challenging environment to work in a team-based atmosphere. Prior to beginning her career with New York Cancer & Blood Specialists, Christina practiced as a physician assistant at the chemotherapy infusion rooms at both NYU Winthrop and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. At Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Christina served as the Bone Marrow Transplantation Coordinator, and was part of the The Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Research and Treatment Program headed by Dr Kanti Rai. Chrtistina’s stellar academic credentials allowed her to flourish and begin her career as a physician assistant. Sundas Syeda, MPS, PA-C earned her bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University, and graduating cum laude, majoring in biology. She then went on to pursue her master’s degree from the Eastern Virginia Medical School, graduating in 2017. Sundas has performed clinical rotations in a multitude of specialties and settings, including family medicine, internal medicine, dermatology, emergency medicine, cardiology, and pediatrics. Prior to working for our practice, Sundas was a physician assistant at Patchogue Urgent Care & Primary Care. Sundas is currently certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and BLS. Silvia received her RN from Suffolk community college in 2011 and her BSN from Adelphi University in 2017. Silvia continued her education at Stony Brook University and she received her MSN, AGNP in May 2020. She is bilingual in both Spanish and English, which Is very helpful for the Spanish community. Silvia became an NP because she always enjoyed advocating and caring for others. She has been an RN for nine years and has been working for NYCBS as an infusion nurse for eight years. Joanne Maynard

Joanne Maynard DNP, ANP-BC, AOCNP, RN is a board-certified Adult Health Nurse Practitioner. Joanne has worked in oncology/hematology since 1994. She graduated from Adelphi University as a Clinical Nurse Specialist with a master’s degree in nursing. She obtained a Nurse Practitioner Certificate and then a doctor of nursing practice degree from Stony Brook University. As a clinical nurse specialist at Stony Brook University Hospital, Joanne was instrumental in opening the first medical beds and developing the Oncology Nursing Program, where she trained many registered nurses in oncology nursing and chemotherapy administration. She went on to work as a nurse practitioner in medical oncology in the breast service. Joanne spent five years in private practice, at Eastern Long Island Hematology/Oncology managing the care of many patients with a wide variety of oncology/hematology problems. After, Joanne practiced in the breast center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. She spent the next six years at the regional facility in Commack, where she was the triage nurse practitioner responsible for assessing and treating patients with new clinical symptoms in hopes of avoiding emergency room visits. Additionally, Joanne participated in the development of the Phillips Family Cancer Center. After working per diem as a nurse practitioner for New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) covering weekends, Joanne has now joined full-time in Riverhead and Southampton, where she provides excellent cancer care close to home. Joanne’s responsibilities include the assessment and treatment of medical oncology/hematology patients such as physical exams, ordering and interpreting labs and tests, and prescribing treatments and medication.

Anna Silverberg

A little over a decade later, Anna obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Long Island University, C.W. Post. Thereafter, she completed a Master of Science in Adult Health Nursing at SUNY Stony Brook.<p> <p>Prior to joining New York Cancer & Blood Specialists, Anna has been instrumental to the breast surgical team at Ellen Hermanson Breast Center where she provided comprehensive clinical assessment and care to men and women. Additionally, Anna practiced at the Phillips Family Cancer Center, evaluating oncology patients and oversaw radiation oncology patients during their treatments.<p>

Before joining New York Cancer & Blood Specialists, Andrea spent five years practicing at Winthrop-University Hospital in Hematology and Medical Oncology.</p> <p>She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Distinguished Fellow Association of Physician Assistants in Oncology, and Advanced Practitioners in Hematology and Oncology. Donna Galgano

<p>Donna Galgano, the Nurse Practitioner at New York Breast Health, received her undergraduate nursing degree from the State University at Binghamton. She completed a Master’s Degree in Health Education at Adelphi University, as well as a second Master’s Degree in Nursing with certification as an Adult Health Nurse Practitioner.<p> <p>For eight years, Ms. Galgano was the Director of Breast Cancer Patient Education for the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. She developed a comprehensive, multidisciplinary education program at three health system hospitals called, “Living With Breast Cancer,” for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and their families. She successfully managed them for more than six years.<p> <p>She is certified by the State of New York as an Adult Health Nurse Practitioner. She is an active member of several professional societies including the New York State Nurse Practitioner Association and the Oncology Nursing Society.<p> <p>Donna assists the physicians with all aspects of patient care including well and high-risk patient management, postoperative care, clinical trials, genetic testing, and survivorship. She also serves as a Patient Navigator for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer provide, guidance, referrals and educational counseling.</p>

<p>Yaakov Perlstein has been a registered nurse working at NYCBS for two years as a certified chemotherapy/immunotherapy infusion RN. After completing a combined degree program at Pace University, he recently earned his Master’s degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner. He plans on continuing to practice as an NP in the field of oncology.</p> <p>Yaakov is passionate about healthcare and his patients. Higer Abdallah

<p>Higer Abdallah, FNP is a board-certified Nurse Practitioner who started her higher education in 2009, receiving her nursing degree from Long Island University in 2014. She immediately started at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center inpatient medical/surgical units and transitioned to acute-care and trauma, where she received her certifications in critical care and stroke.</p> <p>She transferred to Stony Brook-Southampton Hospital, wherein she soon joined the OR staff. She currently manages 6 pharmacy technicians, 1 full-time pharmacist, and 3 per diem pharmacists. She ensures proper workflow and guideline adherence. Gail enjoys the balance of being an administrator and a clinical pharmacist. Gail’s background is in home infusion, specialty pharmacy, and retail pharmacy. He has worked for NYCBS since 2017 and has held many positions: Inventory Control Associate, Human Resources Associate, and Assistant to the CFO, eventually working his way up to VP. His role is to ensure organizational decisions are profitable and sustainable. He oversees the day-to-day operations and works alongside executive leadership to develop and coordinate the company’s goals across the team. Nick is a graduate from the State University of New York College at Oswego with a Bachelor of Science in Finance. Nick enjoys playing as well as coaching Lacrosse.

Kavita Seodat-Lauben

Vice President of Administrative Operations 
<p>Kavita is the Vice President of Administrative Operations.</p> <p>She is experienced in strategic planning, business development, physician relationship management and has a proven track record of successive advancement. Kavita will oversee and improve the daily operational functions to improve business efficiency and organizational workflow development.</p> <p>Previously, Kavita helped advance the strategic vision, goals and objectives of the Katz Institute for Women's Health (KIWH) related to program expansion and integration as the Regional Director of Program Development at Northwell.</p> <p>Kavita earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Hofstra University and a Master’s in Business Administration from Southern New Hampshire University.</p>

Joe Varecha

Vice President of Marketing 
Joe has been an asset to the NYCBS’ marketing department for over one year now. He is responsible for developing and implementing NYCBS’ brand across all media outlets. Prior to joining, Joe served as Marketing Director for Connoisseur Media. His background in radio and consumer/business communication has helped provide strategy and increased integrated campaigns. While at Connoisseur Media, Joe was responsible for many NYCBS projects which ultimately led him to transition. Joe began as Project Manager before quickly achieving his title as Senior Director of Marketing. Joe attended the State University of New York College at Oswego where he obtained a B.A. in Mass Media and Communications. Joe played lacrosse in college and enjoys playing hockey in his spare time.

Desmond Graham

Senior Director Of Laboratory Operations 
Desmond Graham, Laboratory Operations Manager. For over the past four years, Desmond has held many different roles at NYCBS. When he first joined, he was hired as a Medical Assistant after completing both an internship and externship. Since then, Desmond has been the Lead Medical Assistant, Lab Quality Assurance Personnel, and Regional Lab Director. Responsible for overseeing all of the laboratory sites and Lab operations, Desmond ensures the lab adheres to guidelines, runs efficiently, and maintains the highest quality. Simultaneously, Desmond has accrued his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Healthcare Administration at Purdue University. He is currently in the process of obtaining a Doctorate. Desmond is a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served for eight years and is a certified six sigma black belt.

Jodi Botts

Senior Director of Implementation and Operations 
Jodi Botts is Director of Administrative Operations. Jodi is responsible for onboarding new clinics and monitoring the operations of the site. She works closely with OncoEMR by identifying issues and creating solutions. Jodi helps to improve the daily operational functions to improve business efficiency and develops administrative workflows. Jodi has been part of New York Cancer & Blood Specialists for five years and has held multiple positions. When she first joined, she was a receptionist and eventually worked her way to become Regional Director. She enjoys being part of an organization built upon a family, both within the organization and with the patients. Her father was treated at NYCBS and watching him fight cancer inspired her to help others enjoy the precious time we have on earth. Jodi currently attends St. Joseph College and is attaining a dual degree in Healthcare Administration.

Anthony Peterson

Regional Director 
Anthony Peterson is Regional Director. He has been with NYCBS for over four years and has held many different positions. From front desk receptionist, supervisor, unit coordinator, Executive Assistant, to Regional Director, Anthony is well versed in patient care and operational needs. Anthony loves to embrace new opportunities and challenges.

Candice Hulse

Regional Director 
Candice Hulse, PCMH CCE is a Regional Director. Candice oversees NYCBS’ Northern Region. Her responsibilities include employee engagement, continuous quality improvement efforts, and oversight of location operations. Previously, Candice worked as a healthcare consultant where she managed practice transformation for healthcare facilities across Long Island, ensuring practices met and sustained value-based care requirements. Her firm was contracted by New York State to function as Project Managers under the NYS DSRIP Initiative. She then worked as the Corporate Compliance and Quality Manager of a Stony Brook Southampton Hospital-affiliated multi-specialty group on the East End of Long Island. Candice led the NYS DSRIP Suffolk County Pilot program for implementing the Regional Health Information Exchange (RHIO) into primary care and specialty offices to facilitate enhanced secure information sharing to improve Suffolk County's patient health outcomes. Candice is thrilled to help meet the needs of the hematology-oncology community. New York Cancer & Blood Specialists provides her the opportunity to combine her passion with her career: driving down healthcare costs, improving population health outcomes, and increasing access to top-quality care. Candice obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Management and is currently completing her Master’s in Health Administration at Stony Brook University.

Stephanie Curtin

Regional Director 
Stephanie Curtin, MBA is a Regional Director. Stephanie oversees NYCBS’ Southern Region. Her responsibilities include standardizing NYCBS policies throughout all locations, improving quality metrics, and managing overall operations within her region. Prior to joining NYCBS, she was the Office Manager for Restoration Men’s Health, where she worked alongside the administrative team and was responsible for managing overall office operations in multiple locations. Stephanie is excited to advance her career while working at New York Cancer and Blood Specialists. She is passionate about reducing healthcare costs, while continuing to advance the quality of care provided to the healthcare community. Stephanie will continue to work toward those efforts during her time at NYCBS.

Regina Jaworski

Director of Finance 
Regina Jaworski serves as Director of Finance. Regina oversees all areas of finance and administration including bookkeeping, accounts payable and payroll. She provides strategic analyses for senior management to determine project and company profitability, works with the accounting team to prepare financial statements and special reports and supports the staff with their time and payroll needs . Since 2014, she has managed payroll for the entire staff and witnessed the exponential growth of the company. Her background in freelance accounting has helped numerous clients with small businesses. Regina’s hobbies include biking, painting and crafting with her daughter, and genealogy. She has traced her family tree back to the 14th century.

Julia Harwood

Vice President of Clinical Operations 
Julia Harwood is Vice President of Clinical Operations Julia is responsible for the clinical related aspects of our EMR system and related reporting capabilities. She supports our clinical team: Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Chemotherapy Technicians, and our Clinical Support Medical Assistants, and works closely with the Implementation team, as we welcome new offices and team members. Since 2014, Julia continues to tackle every new role, She started as an Infusion RN and a couple of years later created the Chronic Care Management [CCM] program. Julia has held titles such as Head Nurse, Assistant Director of Nursing, Director of Nursing, and VP of Clinical Operations. In 2010, Julia graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a Bachelors in Advertising and Marketing. After giving birth to her son and seeing how the nurses cared for them in those challenging moments, Julia was inspired to pay-it-forward for the rest of her career. In 2014, she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Molloy College. She is currently enrolled in an MSN/MBA dual degree program.

Benjamin Owens III

Creative Director 
Owens graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) with honors. As a student, he worked with a fledgling company called Adobe as they worked to refine their new softwares. Concerned, he created the Book Illustration & Construction program at RIT, to ensure traditional skill sets would be maintained, as computers began to enter the creative landscape. <br><br> He started his career in the beauty industry, working for companies such as; Calvin Klein and Victoria Secrets as a Packaging Design Engineer. Utilizing 3D part rendering software such as Solid Works, he won two package of the year awards for his work. <br><br> Owens later went on to work in the Craft Beer, Wine and Liquor industry as a creative director, where his work excelled from inception to completion. Campaigns included work for almost 50 clients including: Blue Point, Lawsons, Brotherhood, Diageo and others. <br><br> As an established illustrator and graphic designer, his work has been showcased in the Rock & Roll industry for artists such as Bernie Worrell (Parliament-Funkadelic), Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead), and Phish. Projects ranged from Album Artwork to T-shirts. He’s also been known to design skateboards for ZOO YORK, where he holds the title of senior illustrator at CHAPMAN SKATEBOARDS. <br><br> He is also recognized as an established fine artist. He is a former gilding specialist for the world-famous Sotheby’s Auction house, where he performed restoration & conservation (post-auction) on the world’s finest treasures and antiquities. Works ranged from JFK’s birdhouse, built-in grade school to Marie Antoinette’s bed. He started as an apprentice making materials by hand according to region-specific tradition and left with the skill set of a master gilder and carver. <br><br> Owens’ paintings have been featured in JUXTAPOZ Magazine and have received numerous awards including some from Mark Ryden & Parlor Gallery. His sculptural work has been praised by Jonathan Levine and collected by several well-known artists including Peter Max. Pulse Magazine awarded him the title of VIP ARTIST for Long Island and as of recent, was recognized by HIFRUCTOSE Magazine for his Digital Collage work. <br><br> Now at NYcancer, he intends to apply his adaptive skills to an ever-changing landscape, with the hopes of being part of a team that relentlessly tries to conquer cancer in a creative way.

Jeryl Arocho

Corporate Recruiter 
Jeryl joined NYCBS in 2016. She has been an integral part of the Staffing leadership team previously serving as an administrative assistant for the chief officers. Her role identifies the staffing needs of the company to meet its overall strategic goals. She oversees the scheduling of over 1300 physicians and employees and ensures compliance of the NYCBS’ policies and procedures. Her previous experience in management has helped provide the leadership skills that are evident today. Jeryl earned a bachelor’s degree in business from SUNY Old Westbury. She is a proud wife and mother. An avid traveler, her most notable trips include Iceland, Greece, and Italy.

Donato Antonecchia

Director of Supply Chain 
Donato serves as Director of Supply Chain. He oversees the purchasing, monitoring, and approving of all pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and medical equipment. He collaborates with various departments to direct the overall supply chain operations. Donato has been with NYCBS for seven years and has witnessed firsthand the growth and innovations of NYCBS and its facilities. He is currently pursuing his bachelor's in Business Administration at SUNY - Farmingdale. Donato enjoys being active and plays basketball, boxing, and weight lifting.

Michael Mitrani

Director of Revenue Operations 
Michael Mitrani is the Director of Revenue Operations and has been a part of New York Cancer & Blood Specialists for over 13 years. Michael has navigated through several different positions since joining in 2007 from Medical Records Associate, Receptionist, Unit Coordinator, Certified Medical Coder, and Financial Counselor to finally, Director of Revenue Operations which he has held since 2014. Michael is responsible for working closely with the Chief Revenue Officer in overseeing the day-to-day operations of Revenue Cycle Management including billing/collection of accounts receivable, prior authorizations for medical/pharmacy/radiology, insurance eligibility/referrals, financial services (counselors) and medical records. Michael always strives to be a direct resource and guide for patients in any of their insurance or financial needs throughout their journey.

Paul Kazemier

Vice President Patient Communications 
Paul Kazemier is Vice President Patient Communications. Paul currently manages the day-to-day operations of the Call Center, New Patient Coordinators, Triage, Chronic Care Management, Transitional Care Management & Scheduling Coordinators over the past two years with an ever-growing staff of 160+ team members. He has been instrumental in each department's tremendous growth and success. His efforts with implementing Healthix have helped alert our physicians if patients are admitted, so they can receive the proper care. Paul has obtained his Master’s degree in Business Administration at Dowling College.

Carlos Ng

Regional IT Director 
<p>Carlos is responsible for NYCBS’ IT infrastructure, technical operations and projects oversight for all city branches. Also. he manages, provides training and mentorship to team members. Carlos also reviews and implements IT policies and procedures to support information privacy and security.</p> <p>Carlos graduated with a B.S. Systems Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo., and his M.S. in Computer Science from New York Institute of Technology. Prior to his career at NYCBS, Carlos worked as a tech supervisor and operation manager in the server manufacturing industry, and as an IT consultant in the wholesale and retail industry. He has worked 20 years in the IT industry.</p> <p>Carlos is constantly evaluating IT trends, tools and best industry practices to help strengthen our company IT infrastructure, and enhance IT service management system to deliver better patient care. Carlos loves learning about languages, fluent in spanish, cantonese and mandarin, next goal is to learn italian and portuguese.</p>

Saleha Shaikh

Regional Director for NYCBS in Queens and the Bronx 
<p>Saleha is a Regional Director for NYCBS in Queens and the Bronx. She is an experienced leader in patient and client services with a demonstrated 15+ years of working in the hospital and healthcare industry. Saleha has experience in overseeing a large group of direct reports and excels in the areas of implementation, process management, staff training, and development.</p> <p>She has the proven ability to develop strong and meaningful relationships with faculty, and community members, with a maintained focus on the best interest of patients at all times. Saleha's career experiences provide a diverse background from various roles in healthcare that allows her to adapt to new situations nimbly and view her efforts from various lenses.</p> <p>She is skilled in Operations Management, Contact Centers, Healthcare, Data-Analysis, and Leadership.</p> <p>Saleha earned a Bachelors in Psychology at SUNY Old Westbury and a Masters in Psychology at Adelphi University.</p> <p>Saleha speaks Urdu and Hindi, and in her spare time enjoys spending time outdoors with her family.</p>

Jessica Marrone

Director of Utilization Review & Compliance Risk Management 
<p>Jessica has an associate’s degree in Health Information Technology, a bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Management, and has earned her MBA in Business Management. She also received a certification in Human Resource Management.</p> <p>She has a decade of healthcare administration experience serving as an Assistant Risk Manager and working in patient safety and regulatory affairs. Jessica’s experience in healthcare administration will contribute to the efficiency and productivity of our practice.</p>

Brittany Kaliscik

Director of Patient Experience 
<p>Brittany Kaliscik is the Director of Patient Experience. She is responsible for the development and oversight of patient experience strategy planning and implementation across the organization. With over 12 years of experience in the healthcare industry, Brittany has dedicated her career to transforming patient experience within a wide range of multi-specialty practices across the Tri-State region. She values the opportunity to serve the community and understands the significance of providing patients with personal and exceptional patient care.</p> <p>She is a graduate of Brooklyn College and holds a bachelor’s degree in health science. She has served as a subject matter expert on a national patient experience council, where she continued to learn and share best practices with other industry leaders.</p> <p>Outside of work, she enjoys spending as much time as she can with her incredible family and traveling with her beloved dog!</p>

MaryAnn Fragola, DNP, ANPc, ACHPN

Supportive & Palliative Care 
<p>MaryAnn Fragola, DNP, ANPc, ACHPN is a board-certified oncology nurse practitioner. She has been a part of this practice for the past 20 years providing direct patient care to patients and families. She currently serves as Clinical Director of our Palliative Care program</p> <p>She is a graduate of Wilkes University where she completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. Dr. Fragola earned her MSN degree Adult Nurse Practitioner from SUNY Stony Brook University. Dr. Fragola has experience in hematology, oncology, hospice care, and medical-surgical care in-home, outpatient, and in-hospital settings.</p> <p>More recently, she obtained her National board certification in advanced hospice and palliative care, as well as, completed an advanced training certificate in palliative care. Dr. Fragola has been actively involved in the implementation of our current palliative care program. She is a certified medical marijuana prescriber. She serves as an Adjunct Professor and continues to teach students online, as well as, precept/mentor nurse practitioner students and new hires within the practice.</p> <p>As a Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Fragola’s services include, but are not limited to assessing phone and walk-in triage, performing physical examinations, ordering and interpreting labs and tests, and prescribing treatments and medications.
